About Emotional Intelligence (EQ) Test
Emotional intelligence β the capacity to recognise, understand, and manage emotions in yourself and others β is increasingly recognised as a more reliable predictor of professional and personal success than cognitive ability alone. This quiz explores the two primary dimensions of empathy: affective and cognitive.
Affective empathy is the capacity to physically and emotionally share the feelings of another person. You feel what they feel. This makes you a genuinely validating presence β someone people feel truly heard by β but it also creates vulnerability to compassion fatigue and emotional burnout when the feelings you absorb are chronic or heavy. The Emotional Sponge profile sits at this end of the spectrum.
Cognitive empathy is the intellectual capacity to understand and predict another person's emotional state without necessarily absorbing it. You understand why they are in pain without needing to feel it yourself. This makes you effective at providing solutions and maintaining emotional stability in crisis, but can read as analytical or detached to someone who simply wants to feel less alone. The Rational Architect profile sits here.
Between these poles are the Compassionate Mediator, who combines warmth with clarity; the Balanced Processor, who moves fluidly between feeling and thinking depending on what the situation needs; and the Cognitive Empath, who understands emotions with precision but leads with the mind rather than the gut.
The quiz presents common social scenarios β a colleague receiving unfair public criticism, a friend caught in a recurring problem, a difficult emotional scene in a film β and observes your instinctive response. The result maps your natural position on the affective-cognitive spectrum and identifies both your social strengths and your blind spots.
