About Ikigai: Find Your Reason for Being
Ikigai(生き甲斐) is a Japanese concept that translates loosely as "a reason for being" — the thing that gets you out of bed in the morning. It sits at the intersection of four questions: What do you love? What are you good at? What does the world need? What can you be paid for? Where all four overlap, that is your Ikigai.
The concept originates from Okinawa — one of the world's famous Blue Zones, where people regularly live past 100. Researchers studying Okinawan longevity found that a clear sense of daily purpose was one of the strongest predictors of a long and healthy life. Ikigai is not grand or abstract — for most Okinawans it is simple: tending a garden, teaching a grandchild, running a small shop. The scale doesn't matter. The clarity does.
The Four Pillars of Ikigai
- Passion (Love + Good at) — the overlap of what energises you and what you do well
- Mission (Love + World needs) — the contribution only you are positioned to make
- Vocation (Good at + Paid for) — your professional identity and market value
- Profession (World needs + Paid for) — sustainable work that serves others
